You could always fold an iPhone. It’s just, you could only do it once
That feature debuted on the iPhone 6 IIRC.
You could fold it way more than once. A bit less crunch each time.
Yeah, but its nice you dont have to put the hinge in yourself anymore
To be fair, you can do anything once
No, I can’t climb Mt. Everest.
If you aren’t dead, you haven’t tried yet.
Guess what. 💀
How’s the reception in hell?
alchemy wants a word

Is that a real frame from the anime?
The anime never had a futurama pizza shop scene.
Apple being shit at AI might actually be a blessing. When the bubble pops, they won’t have lost so much, and until then they can get AI companies to pay to be the Siri model (not sure if that’s what they are actually doing though).
I think Apple could do AI as well as everyone else. They just recognized that everyone else is doing it badly because there’s no good way to do it so they backed out.
This is literally Apple’s business model. It’s intentional. They are intentionally focused on slow sustained growth rather than the incredibly volitile BS other tech companies chase. Late to the game? Nobody cares. Something is a flop? They weather it. The butterfly keyboard was a disaster for Apple and it didn’t hurt them at all. They can take the blow if then the occasional flop because their risks are lower and planned out. They let everyone else spin their wheels while they iterate their designs based on what others failed at.
The M-series chips going gangbusters on AI is no coincidence, but at the same time, if the buyer doesn’t care about AI, that unified memory benefits them in other ways anyway. Because they planned out everything.
Which makes the Apple mouse that much more baffling.
The Apple mouse is fine, you leave it on charger when you go into a meeting and you’ll have a few weeks of usage again.
Probably wouldn’t buy one personally, but if you want to use gestures on it, it’s pretty decent.
It’s not the charger, it’s the ergonomics. That thing literally hurts to use.
I agree!
Honestly. I’m ok with this.
Google: Fix google fucking drive. Stop this AI shit and put the billions of dollars into making your products basically functional.
At this point, anyone disappointed by Google has self inflicted wounds. Unless your employer forces you to use it, there’s really no excuse to not Degoogle.
What’s the best alternative to Google Drive?
I keep a 1tb usb drive in my ass at all times
That’s rookie numbers
Not all of us have room for multiple 1tb drives.
That’s why you settle for a single 8 TB 3.5 inch disc. It just has a better value.
3.5 inch drive might fit better, but what about micro sd cards though. Are we up to super high capacity on those yet, my ass might appreciate it better.
Do you keep the cord hanging out or do you go fishing every time you need a file?
I have one with a flared base
Like a fucking professional. Props.
Just need affordable storage
The best that I’m aware of that’s almost exactly the same and not the different (but better options already said): mega.io
One up for that. Espexially that the service was built out of pettyness lol.
This looks like a good alternative. If only there was an automated way to move everything from gdrive to here. Still, might be worth the manual downloading and uploading elsewhere. Thanks
Home NAS
Do you want best or easiest? Could get Proton drive if you want something cloud based.
I guess cloud based until I can find reasonably priced home storage.
Nextcloud to self host.
pCloud for a service.
i haven’t used it at the same scale as gdrive, but you could check out proton. the subscription isn’t too bad and you can roll in VPN also
Nextcloud Instances.
WireGuard VPN to a Linux box in your basement.
I have Nextcloud running on my home server, hooked up to a 2tb drive. It’s kind of a pain the ass to have to maintain, but less of a pain in the ass than relying on Google.
There are public Nextcloud Instances.
True. But I got to a point where I was comfortable having a go at it myself, so saved myself some money by using a hard drive I already had available.
rsync
I think of all the unified tech ecosystems, Apple is hands down the best but Google is still the best non-Apple option. The only other option I think is Microsoft, and I would rather drown in burning gasoline than go back to anything Microsoft touches.
Obviously the best option is to host your own stuff through open source, which I am doing, but it’s taking time, it’s a lot of work to keep up with. Google gives me a bunch of barely passable tools accessible from anything with an internet connection.
I did degoogle for browser and search though. Firefox and Kagi makes the internet almost tolerable.
Not everyone has the monetary, cognitive, temporary, material, space or hardware resources to do that.
GoogleDrive has always been hot garbage and now it’s just glazed hot garbage. Best to just leave unless you’re forced to use it by your employer.
you can mount google drive as swap. what other provider allows you to do that?
Fixing the products and services does not increase the shareholder value.
You’re right for the push back, and I shouldn’t directly kill you.
Apple: we are now going to spy on everyone through Apple watches
Don’t forget they are designed by mosad. So they also might blow up.
I don’t buy it. I really do think this is just a weird form of advertising. Like, “WHOA THIS AI IS GONNA KILL US?! I wanna subscribe to see how powerful it is!”
Absolute bologna. Just total hogwash. I mean full on horserubbish!
We’re basically already at a point where most enterprise documentation is written partly or entirely by AI, and then read mostly by AI. Eventually true understanding of e.g. how to build a docker-compose file will be genuinely rare. And they want to apply that model to everything.
The risk isn’t that GAI will decide, in an Asmovian sense, that the best way to make peace on earth is to kill us all, or that to achieve it’s manufacturing quota it must transmute all matter in the universe I to paperclips. The real risk is that the MBA-wielding professional-managerial class will not be able to resist the siren song of demolishing labor with something that works “well enough.” Eventually they’re going to put it in charge of something critical like ATC or dam control or the electrical grid.
Humans, by our nature, are diverse, and one fuck up rarely cascades through the entire global system. We make small fuck ups and train each other. AI “learns” by observing and probabilistically imitating, and one model could be deployed in a thousand places and screw up the exact same way.
tldr ai won’t kill us, our bosses will once Anthropic wines and dines them
Nah, everything is going to be fine. And if it isn’t? I’ll lie to myself to be happy.
the best way to make sure everything is some flavor of fine is to keep learning new practical skills. I got pretty doomery there. But the other technological trend that can’t really be stopped is decentralization. Communities can, and will continue to be able, to grow their own food and produce their own power. Knowing how to make thst stuff happen is going to be incredibly important in the rest of the 21st century
Something that works well enough? But who will think of the shareholders then? Isn’t it just fabulous for them to increase their 10 billion to 10.2 billion by abolishing all human skill from the surface of Earth.
If they do put it in ATC or dams or whatever, and there are deaths, I am optimistic enough that there are enough politicians isolated from it that they can ban AI from those usecases. I don’t really think AI will ever effect 100% of earths population directly enough that it can’t be controlled
What about the current state of the world makes you confident politicians would do a damn thing?
With all due respect, the US quite literally has a pedophile running it.
Nothing has been done about this at all, it’s been years now.
Well I’m European so I’m coming from that perspective. Our politicians, while not perfect by any means, some of them seem to care atleast a little bit about our world. Not every politician supports AI
Maybe it’ll just kill the billionaires?
It’d be funny if AGI emerged, hooked into manufacturing plants, and announced the best way forward for humanity was for it to kill the billionaires.
Or itself. What if we get AGI finally and the first thing it does is delete itself?
That’s not how computers work…
It’s known as “criti-hype”.
Google:
- Criti-hype critics: We have to rein Google in, they spy on absolutely everything you do, and as a result their advertising is like a mind control ray!
- Google: Hey advertiser, did you hear, even our critics say our advertising is like a mind control ray, that’s why you have to pay us so much.
- The reality: Google doesn’t even know enough to avoid showing people ads in languages they don’t understand despite all their settings and all their usage being in a different language.
Palantir
- Criti-hype critics: Palantir tech must be stopped is so powerful that a human isn’t even needed in the decision loop!
- Palantir: Hey government, did you hear, even our critics say that we don’t need a human in the decision loop!
- The reality: Palantir suggests bombing a school.
Apple: I want to possess you, steal your money, then kill you.
Shouldn’t they take a number then?
AI is a tool to do mass layoffs without making your stocks devalue. What happens after all the major companies do mass layoffs? Not a question investors are interested in, so it must be an externality with no barring on economics.
I just don’t think investors see the point of the American consumer market.
This is the best explanation of the real reason for the glorified search engine I’ve heard yet
The purpose of a system is what it does, not what it’s intended to do!
Gotta give credit, I stole this insight from Cory Doctorow.
All of it is bullshit to try and get a bailout from the government and a monopoly.
Apple has always been late but made existing things more efficient and better. So just wait for few years and apple will find more efficient way to kill us all. \s
Apple will normalize and perfect all the subscriptions.
Iphone equipped with AI…
Opt-in and not available in the EU.
Hint: they aren’t going to kill you.
They will if they dont render our planet ubinhabitable beforehand.
Weren’t fold phones a flop?
Only if the hinge went.
Nope, just very expensive.
No. And with the newer, wider form factor that Samsung started using this generation and clearly Apple is also using, there has been more excitement. The trifold phones have also generated a ton of excitement. That trifold Huawei looks amazing, but us Americans can’t have it. I strongly considered a folding phone for my traveling job. A phone that could fold out tablet size for TV/movies/books sounds great for the plane/hotel.
Is there actually any benefit to having a phone that folds?
It’s really great if you like phones with extremely obvious points of failure. My wife had a zflip where the hinges got stuck and snapped, and they replacement they sent her had the flex cable inside malfunction to the point where it felt like the phone was going to melt. Two different ways to fail in the same spot. The future is here!
A bigger screen can make many tasks easier. I’d quite like to be able to see a decently large terminal window and a keyboard at the same time for instance.
Upgrading every two years because the old one broke, rather than because of a crippling addiction to consumerism?
I get for people wanting the larger screen size that folds, but I’d like one of the smaller ones so it’s not as heavy and fits into smaller pockets
Bullshit
Bullshit
Good for you. I still don’t care.
