In the books, the school putting out a huge feast for the students is supposed to show the stark contrast of starvation and abuse Harry went through prior to Hogwarts. If this is a sign of how little effort they’re putting in I’m thrilled… Let it bomb and bomb hard. Terfs don’t deserve our time or money

It’s interesting how the books never truly question the class consciousness that is at the heart of his backstory.

Thats because rowling was writing a story about maintaining the status quo. Its interesting just how much she wrote overtly class conscious inequality, like wizards being an isolated superior class who can act with impunity on muggles, but then hand waves it as appropriate and good because the alternative is “bad”.

That and a lot of the early books had an editor tweaking things.

Remember when Harry traded some food he bought with Ron even when he didn’t want Ron’s food? Then later he and Ron crashed the family car and Harry couldn’t be bothered to help pay for a new one?

The entire bit about the weasleys being poor was just another example of the horrible writing anyway. Remember how a metric crap ton of the ministry of magic employees commuted to work? Floo powder. Remember what they had just laying around at home in the burrow? Floo powder. If the weasleys were supposed to be way below the level of others, it wasn’t shown very well in random moments, just the ones where the author was deliberately making that the point of the scene.

At best, arthur’s choice of transportation was because of his obsession with muggle stuff, but if it was supposed to be another example of their poverty…

If I’m being really charitable, the biggest thing that was going for the poverty/wealth divide in the magical world was where you lived. Castle/urban/picturesque = rich, while countryside/rural/cottage type = poor. But let’s not discuss the ‘magical villages’ because their details were always incredibly vague.

It’s a childish attempt to talk about morality. A “muggle” that can’t be accepted unless they are truly exceptional. Race based names. The poor Irish. Ya she been a racist.

I’ve gotten the impression that the British are a bit more class conscious than Americans. I think it’d be hard not to be when there are actual lords and ladies running around.

What just normal drinking glasses? In whimsical magic castle?

Lmao I want nothing to do with that series anymore for a variety of reasons but if this is actually a screenshot of the utterly unnecessary remakes then that is pathetic. I’m pretty sure the source material said goblets. Most meals were described as tables full of food such as the left. Not a cafeteria plate that wouldn’t look out of place in a modern school. Soulless remake cashgrab I hope it flops so hard it just basically marks the end of HP in the mainstream. Nobody asked for this.

I disagree, making it less available adds an extra barrier (assuming that magically you are the only available seeder for this hypothetical torrent which is a stretch). And my expectation is that people who are pirating tend to be more willing to wait for a few days on a torrent than they are to pay for a shitty movie.

Imo nobody should download or watch the movie regardless, it’d be better if the whole thing just got removed from the public conscience. So I say don’t contribute in any way to helping people keep the garbage alive. If you truly must watch it yourself you should do it alone in a dark room with a pirated copy in shame and erase any traces of this asap (again, in my opinion).

So you’d take away the option to steal from a terf, and replace it with an option to pay the terf.

Sorry I’m still not seeing the logic here.

I think the most offensive detail is the tray. In the books the meals are teleported directly onto the tables so you can stay put with your plate and just get whatever you like. No need for a tray to carry your food to your seat at the table

I think what people miss here is that this is Americanisation that is the norm in most US movies. While the original movies were distributed by Warner Brothers, the producers were largely British, so were many other important people in the making of that movie. So they apparently stayed their ground in staying closer to the British source material.

In the remake those safeguards are gone. People just realise it because they see the contrast to the original. But look at other US movies, so much of it has fantasy scenarios that are still very “USified”, to not confuse the US audience too much. This is the most obvious when Hollywood takes up a successful foreign movie and makes a complete US “remake”.

To make the food in the first place. Magic cannot make or transform food. But you can move it with magic, store it in magic containers, or add magical properties to food.

I’d have been so happy if this is what school meals looked like when I was in school. Breakfast was some cheap peanut butter and jelly thing that technically had peanut butter and jelly inside it, and MAYBE a rubbery sausage the size of a crayon.

Lunch was like a red apple and some thinly sliced mystery meat and a slice of cheese

Toast, sausage, AND an egg? Orange juice that’s not in a carton with an expiration date of two months ago? An egg and a sausage that don’t look like they came out of a box? This is practically paradisical compared to half the shit a lot of US public schools do.

Do the wizards also gas their bananas? The choice of fruit here implies that wizards are bound to the limitations of modern farming and container shipping. The common prevalence of bananas in the real world boils down to a pile of technical limitations on growing and importing fruit.

    1. Unlike most other common grocery store fruits they are tropical. Which means that they can be grown under normal conditions year round. It also means they need to be imported which would normally make them expensive
    2. Bannanas can be picked green, shipped refrigerated, and ripened under ethylene gas (tomatoes and apples might also be in this category). This enables bannanas to be transported by ordinary container ships rather than needing to be done by air. This also enables some amount of stockpiling. This cuts costs a lot such that bannanas can be cheaper than local produce unlike most other imported produce that needs to be flown in.

So, wisards shit in the corner of the room they’re in and then magically teleport their shit somewhere. The place they teleport it to is now full of potent wisard shit chemicals. That’s where they grow their banana trees.

Because HP is a role model for poor children, and poor children shouldn’t have the expectation of getting a feast ever. They should see the bare minimum school lunch and think it looks like a horn of plenty because US schools have been shutting down and reducing school meal programs. Real students don’t get anything.
