When I was a kid, the Lion King was my favorite movie, and when Mufasa died, I knew he was dead because his whiskers were wrinkled, and I knew I had never ever seen a wrinkled whisker on our (alive) cat. Now I learn that alive cats can have wrinkled whiskers…was anything ever true?

  • The article I saw yesterday about this Gen. Zhang Youxia said he was leaking sensitive information to the US. I wonder why Reuters declined to mention this accusation.

It seems like, maybe, with a title like “nobody is safe”, the authors are trying to scare us more than they’re trying to inform us.

It’s also a bit strange that they’re spinning the fact that this guy’s status and personal connections didn’t make him immune as a bad thing. If we were talking about western politics this would be a virtue.

  • I wouldn’t even recommend using LLMs in place of search engines, since they make stuff up. If it’s providing sources, you can check those, but you have to be rigorous enough to check every detail, which just isn’t realistic. People are lazy.

The best way I’ve heard them described is “bullshit machines”, and I don’t say that because I think they’re stupid, but because they “bullshit” as opposed to lying or telling the truth. When you’re bullshitting, the truth is irrelevant, as long as it sounds good. That’s exactly how LLMs work.

So if there’s a problem that can be solved by bullshitting, that’s where an LLM might be the right tool for the job.
