Reddit was a decent solution, till it enshitified to make money. Before then, it was already flooded by the masses. Clearly their method worked fine. Not perfect, but at least fine. So I don’t see why the masses are the problem. I personaly put all the blame on the need to make money of a vital piece of digital infrastructure.

The tricky part, is that we also cannot put it in the hands of a government, since it can become a tool for propaganda. So the EU hosting something like reddit, would also create a conflict of interrests. I’m curious if we can find a good solution to this problem.

It’s gonna get scrambled/minified before it is shipped to the user anyway.

The puzzling part is fun, because you are constantly learning new ways to use your body. See how to balance, how to move around, etc. I have found that dancing gives a similar learning challenge. Especially the more free-form dances like salsa and bachata. It’s fun learning new moves every week during the lesson, and then try to see if you can put them to practise during a party.

And don’t worry about beeing to stiff. If you can balance around boulders, you can get your body to move around for dancing too. Just takes some practise. I currently do both, and feel like I lack dexterity more for the climbing than for the dancing.

And unlike most of the hand-friendly options mentioned already, you do have to use your hands and arms a lot. Just not in a way that puts any stress on them.

It is a matter of responsibility. If you can log into any lemmy instance or mastodon server with the same account, then which server takes responsibility for your actions in the fediverse?

I have seen instances be defederate from because of their lax account creation requirements, or because of harrasment from users from a specific instance.

If an account can log into any instance, then who is responsible for banning the account?

1. It reduces the barrier of entry for new users to get an account going that is not flooded by political extremist views in it’s feed.
2. It causes anonymous users to not see they shitshow. And since most users start out by browsing anonymously while deciding whether they want an account or not, that is a big deal.
3. It gives the impression that this community is at least somewhat ok with the views that these extremists hold.

It should be opt-in to view posts and comments from these sources.

Maybe recently. But I doubt they are responsible for the rampant inflation, since that also hit the cat treats price.

Point 1 has to be chosen when the cat is young. Forcing an outside cat to suddenly only be inside often doesn’t work.

I adopted a 7-year-old cat from the shelter, and after a week of having to be inside all the time, he got more and more frustrated. After a week and a half, he escaped during the night. In the morning, while I was panicking, he came strolling in as if nothing was wrong.

Since he apparently comes back, I allowed him outside from then on. Since that moment, his behaviour inside has improved a lot. No more random play attacks on my ankles and hands, and generally much calmer.

He has also come back home with mice several times. He always eats them. So I think he is very used to living outside. Maybe been a stray, or a farm cat.

Forcing him to be inside would feel cruel.

Could be age/health issues. Could be she doesn’t like the litterbox filler that you use.

Note that purring does not mean she is ok. It means she trusts you.

I agree with that. But that is not a conclusion that should be drawn from the article. Hence my reaction. If anything, the article shows a prime example for why we should spend all those trillions.

Take two speakers that are next to each other. If they emit a tone of the same frequency, the sound will “add up” and be louder in some directions, and cancel out to some degree in others.

A phased array radar uses the same concept, but now on electro magnectic waves, instead of sound waves. And with much more than just 2 emitters. By carefully choosing the phase of the signal in each emitter, itnis possible to both choose a single direction that receives the strongest signal, and to tighten the spread around that direction (creating a pencil beam). This is what the dish is for in standard radars.

If these phases can be fully controlled electronically, you can steer where you are looking, and swap between wide and narrow search beams in an instant. However, that is not a trivial thing to produce. So cheaper phased array radars use mechanical systems, or partial electronic steering (example: only horizontal steering).

The same holds for radar. A radar literally shines a light that anyone looking for it can see. Pinpointing a radar is trivial. Mobile radars can’t stay and detect from a location for very long, without risking an artillery strike. Fast setup and teardown times are crucial, along with a strategy where multiple mobile radars cover for each other, so detection is never offline for long.

Should a dedicated search not use/index ActivityPub instead of the html interface?

If so, instances can simply defederate from search engine instances. So the point you are trying to make still holds.

1. Threads federates
2. Threads hosts 99% of all content and all users.
3. Threads releases and update that allows a new feature. Example: they add buyable threads gold, that you can reward to a post or comment.
4. The rest of the fediverse can’t implement this feature, and is inherently left behind in terms of features.
5. Threads releases an update that breaks federation. 99% of the users do not notice.
6. It takes Threads 3 months to fix the issue.
7. Go back to step 5.

Every non-Threads participant will have less features, and is constantly struggling to keep up with the changes and bugs of Threads. Result: the fediverse cannot grow. Only the most stubborn anti-Meta users will accept the objectively worse experience, just to avoid using Threads. But the average user will just use Threads, instead of joining Mastodon, Kbin, Lemmy, or any of the many other fediverse instances that Threads can federate with.

The staleness of the war feel very much like WW1. WW1 was not won at the frontlines. It was won by the industry and the logistics networks. Ukraine needs a way to harm the Russian industry and logistics, while getting more support of the western economies.

New users will look at lemmy.world before they create an account. They will choose to join after seeing threads posts and comments on the front page. The default settings will keep them looking at threads untill they figure out they can block it. But when they do, they realise that 90% of all posts and comments came from threads, and they just disabled most of the content.

I would be ok with an opt-in mechanism, where the default settings and the anonymous settings disable threads content, but you can unblock them.
