Actually, the way his name is pronounced in Dutch sounds like you’re about to spit out something that was stuck in the back of your throat.

Programming@programming.dev•How would you design online communities so they don't degenerate over time?
3·1 month agoFor example, an advice community could have a “good answer” vote. Each post in an “Am I the Asshole” community could have a “You’re the Asshole”/“You’re NOT the Asshole” vote. That sort of thing.

2·1 month agoThe comparison to tags got me thinking it might be cool if mods or posters could set custom tags/vote types per community or thread.

2·1 month agoI’d say it’s similar to applauding or booing someone who’s addressing a crowd.

7·1 month agoI think it might help to have different vote types. Instead of up and downvotes there could be things like agree/disagree, insightful, funny, quality shitpost, high/low effort post or things like that. That way people who want to see quality discussion could sort by insightful, while people looking for low effort shitposts or memes could sort by something else.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why does it seem like the majority of people think problems are caused by drugs rather than problems causing people to turn to drugs?
8·2 months agoA popular theory among self-proclaimed paychonauts, or people that like to experiment with drugs, but mostly psychedelics, is that using mind-altering substances could lead to ideas or insights that could be (considered) a threat to the status-quo. This is why the powers that be often demonize all drugs equally.
As others have pointed out, many people don’t really like to think about the systemic issues in society that drive people into poverty, homelessness or other problems that often go hand on hand with drug addiction.
It should be pointed out, though, that some drugs can and most likely will ruin your life. The first rule of experimenting with drugs is never, ever try heroin (or other opiates).
Try the uMatrix plugin. It allows you to dis- or enable things like scripts and images on a per-site basis.
And when only one of you nuts it’s an xorgasm.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Vegans of Lemmy, what is your favorite vegan cookbook?
51·3 months agoNot vegan (sorry), but I thought The Modern Vegetarian Kitchen by Peter Berley was really good. Not all recipes are vegan, but most (all iirc) of them also have a vegan variant.
Thief? No, she caught that hot dog fair and square!
So apparently telling your friend or acquaintance you don’t share their particular sense of humour is worse?
I guess I shouldn’t overthink a shitpost, but is it really such a social faux pas to tell someone your tastes are different from theirs? I just wonder if this is a cultural thing that I’m too Dutch to get, or if it’s more of a I’m-too-socially-awkward-to-have-an-opinion-of-my-own kind of thing?
Yeah, that guy was really ahead of his time.

1·4 months agorotten.com/library contained articles with text and images, not videos of people dying. The point was to inform, not to shock. It was pretty different from the rest of the website.

81·5 months agoRotten.com was known for horrible pictures of gore and whatnot, but also contained a collection of interesting, weird and insightful articles at /library. That site is gone now, but the article have been preserved at https://rottenlibrary.net/
