World News@lemmy.world•Arson turns Amazon reforestation project to ashesEnglish
5·2 years agoI’ve been waiting 30 years for industrial solutions but it is obvious that marketing and advertising to maintain the status quo of legacy companies is still a better roi.
This is a regulatory issue not a market failure.
Also I’m sure plastic recycling on a large scale is just around the corner. The plastic packaging on my plastic products keeps saying so. (/s)

politics @lemmy.world•Trump, the ultimate attention seeker, wages a campaign largely out of public view
13·2 years agoI thought it was because the campaign hemorrhages cash and they can’t afford it. Seems like they are trying to spin this as some kind of plan.

15·2 years agoProbably also includes counseling or psych treatment for depression and anxiety and suicidality related to this plus preventing doctors from using preferred names or pronouns while also closing resources that these kids could have turned to for community support. The cruelty is the point.

politics @lemmy.world•GOP senators weigh ‘special’ meeting on their leadership after McConnell’s freeze
12·2 years agoSeriously. The whole lot of them should be out enjoying their time, playing with their great grand kids. Why they would even want to stay is beyond me (unless they’ve been enjoying themselves this whole time which is probably the way it is).
The worst part is it shows a failure to pass on the right skills because they don’t trust the next generation to lead.

politics @lemmy.world•Trump's competitor promises to give part of Ukraine to Russia and block Kyiv's accession to NATO
3·2 years agoYeah, occam’s says it’s a political ploy. We are literally discussing candidates and how they present themselves. To legitimately bring in mental health seems a stretch.

6·2 years agoWould you put someone “just nuts” in front of a tv camera? But really, I’ve never known the gop to just roll with whomever, their messaging is tightly controlled. If he is up there it’s for a reason.

2031·2 years agoThey are doing it on purpose. He’s 38 years old, no one is letting him near the presidency. But these over the top statements are intended to make some other candidate look like not the craziest guy in the room.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•Sci-fi books which don't involve too much space travels and massive world builds?
4·2 years agoNexus trilogy. It takes place on Earth, present day, a young neurologist discovers that a drug is actually nano machines and gives people the ability to share thoughts, communication, memories, and experiences. The researcher struggles to decide if this is good for all of humanity. Very good descriptions of technology, hacking, programming, exciting action (US gov is trying to reign in the nano machines.
The ultimate topic is transhumanism as technology gives us bigger than human abilities and posthumanism, where the changes we make now qualify us as so different in skills and abilities that we are no longer human.
I just finished the first book and I enjoyed it a lot.

politics @lemmy.world•Think the Police Should Wear Body Cameras? That Will Cost Taxpayers Extra.
1·2 years agoYou’re right. The median appears to be around 50-60k which is pretty good. I thought they were much lower. I guess scrap that idea. Seems like they got inflation-adjusted wages over the past 20 years while the rest of us just got inflation and a smaller box of cookies.

politics @lemmy.world•Think the Police Should Wear Body Cameras? That Will Cost Taxpayers Extra.
328·2 years agoI just had a weird idea. What if we flip it. Pay cops more. Better vacations, more support. Sure pay them for the cameras, call it whatever. Tax the rich and pay these working class people that kinda seem to be exploited. Maybe they’d be less angry and less likely to take it out on us.
Isn’t their pay absolute crap? Like, I don’t have a problem setting a minimum salary of $65k for cops and teachers too. I’m pretty sure the averages are well below this. I guess it never occurred to me to think that some cops are facing food and living security issues themselves if they have a family and barely make $35k.
