It just feels silly and unprofessional while being seriously useful. Exactly my flavour of software, makes the web feel less corporate.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Plex’s crackdown on free remote streaming access starts this week - Ars TechnicaEnglish
32·21 days agoThere are custom themes out there that change the interface.
Right click -> identify-> Title name, has yet to fail me.
Its been a long time since i used plex so I can’t say how much “easier” its over there but compared to the days before streaming this little upfront work takes less time then going to a physical store to rent.
Maintenance takes no work and it cant be enshitificated (someone will just port it)
What do you mean it’s called paper scissors rock?
I thought it was called scissors rock paper?

This is an article on “the biggest political scandal in presidential history” not only does presidential use of autopen go back for decades, it reads like it was written by ai.

The handful of decent cops in the uk and europe: “Am i joke to you?”
Obviously they still have plenty of incorporated rot but some countries actually train police to de-escalate and are held to standards.
It also helps that gun violence is exceedingly rare when guns are regulated well. Having to fire a bullet can be a legal a nightmare for a cop because of the paperwork and immediate investigation into wether it was appropriate for them to do so.

20·2 months agoQ: Why support Israel if jews hate christians?
A: Leveraging alliances for U.S. benefit, (fake) peace in Gaza makes us look good. Theological differences don’t prevent collaboration on shared interests.
Why bad answer: Failed to adres the antisemitism
Article does not deserve a click, fascists be fascists. The person who asked the question is the broken clock showing the right time by asking a good question for still wrong reasons and got a default calculated answer.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Twingate good for remote access to a selfhosted Nextcloud server?English
1·2 months agoHonestly not having a static public ip address would be a dealbreaker for me, reason to change isp.
But thats not always an option.
My old isp got a new ip every full modem reboot and a way i used to circumvent this is with duckdns. It’s a free dns service i used before i had money to pay for my own domain.
If i recall correctly they have a desktop tool that connects to your account that scans for your current dynamic public ip and then updates it for your freesubdomainname.duckdns.org which is what you use to connect.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Twingate good for remote access to a selfhosted Nextcloud server?English
13·2 months agoI never heard if twingate but i see no reason why not to selfhost Wireguard.
Its a proven open source vpn.
As far as a little research went. Twingate is proprietary software and caters to enterprises, it has some open source alternatives that have a similar functionality. Most if them using Wireguard under the hood. Look for tailscale/headscale or netbird.
Most of that i did know but i somehow assumed a combination of
- a functional exe always being compiled
- this being a functional exe (i still don’t really know if it is)
- it requiring a tool to extract its contents.
It never occurred to me that i could try and click one within github source code and have it open as text. I thought that was going to just attempt to download it.
Til, i did not know you could do that.
Does anyone know what that .exe actually does?
Don’t worry, i still get trapped in the same biases at times.
I used to make fun of bottled egg liquids till someone accurately pointed out that for some cracking an egg is a real obstacle.
I don’t need one but i know plenty of old/disabled people for who a straw is a necessity.
I am happy we moved away from plastic straws being mainstream but i also feel like there should have been possible exceptions for medical use. The paper and aluminium alternatives are really not that good.
I get it but its rather ableist.
Also you never tried drinking from a fast food drink cup full of ice. Freezes your damn lips.

This administrations brand is to sell government work (or non work) for personal favours and there literally accepting “exposure” as payment to signal how normalised they made it.
If you are a big enough name they don’t care how petty the bribe is. As long as it shows the world that they are open for this kind off business.
Every bribe, no matter how small is pure profit if you never owned what you’re selling.
