There’s weirdness sometimes if devices don’t respect your network’s dns settings and just use their own. You can override that by forcing a dns redirect if your router supports that but not all consumer ones do unless you put openwrt or something on them.

World News@lemmy.world•Denmark sets up ‘night watch’ to monitor Trump after Greenland rowEnglish
2·20 days agoI assume they’re refering to The Watch, but that’s less an adaptation of Pratchett and more an adaptation of that show runner’s pet project with the names of characters from Discworld overlaid to get funding.

politics @lemmy.world•‘Unforgivable’: Trump’s ‘piggy’ insult is stoking more outrage than usual
8·29 days agoThat’s true, but I also think there is a stark difference between a low quality ‘off the record’ recording and standing at the official podium taking questions from vetted journalists to a live feed on every news network.
Anyone paying the slightest bit of attention has known he is, at best, an odious man-child for years. But a lot of people actively try to avoid paying attention because they’ve been trained that it’s “just politics” instead of the infrastructure that impacts every aspect of their lives.

3·4 months agoI mean it is a religion, and they are zealots. There have been schisms before over both more and less (purgatory / indulgences, ‘not my pope’) than “is empathy important to Christianity”.
“Religious” is not a synonym for “good” or “kind”. It’s about adherence to a belief system, which may conditionally include aspects of those attributes.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•The Picture of the Century... Nature defeats Technology
9·4 months agoJust looked up the episode (2015, Ep8). (also some cool U2 stuff)
They’re investigating whether it would be deadly by cutting through your neck. Drone tech has also changed significantly in the last decade. They literally have trouble flying straight and level and hitting the neck of their dummy. But their main problem is the drone hits something and falls away. They put the same smaller prop on a stick and saw into a plucked chicken. Their bigger one did actually slice the neck open before falling away.
Modern drones have much more powerful motors. From personal experience even the folding blades will give you at least surface cuts. Do not randomly assume they will not cut you, especially if you grab them.

Incognito mode (Chrome) and Private mode (Safari/Firefox) and InPrivate Browsing (Edge/IE) have had disclaimers/explanations for years, Chrome just expanded the disclaimer after settling the suit. Unfortunately for them the judge didn’t know how the internet works any better than the plaintiffs. Winding back the odometer on a car doesn’t mean toll roads don’t know you drove there, it just means “you” have no record of it.
Opera / Vivaldi offer an integrated VPN, but they’re about the only ones other than stuff like the Tor Browser.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Google killed Maps Timeline, so I self-hosted a better one [OwnTracks]English
3·6 months agoSame, been kicking myself since I found out it was all gone a few weeks ago. Don’t know why I didn’t make a ‘just in case’ backup / export.
Still infuriating they can just go “oops all gone”. It came through the roll-out fine, I remember looking stuff up in February. As far as I can tell it was a later unrelated glitch.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Google killed Maps Timeline, so I self-hosted a better one [OwnTracks]English
7·6 months agoGoogle also accidentally deleted a random amount of user’s timeline data if you didn’t immediately catch it and restore from back up last March before the affected backups were overwritten. If you didn’t keep a close enough watch on your timeline to know that that happened, everything before ~Feb 2025 is gone now.
Ask me how I know. Yes I kept up on permissions. Yes I had backups on. No I didn’t have a new device. I even have dozens of available gigabytes of paid storage on Google One.
I’m sure it will only get more stable due to maps and timeline being revenue generators that encourage investment.

politics @lemmy.world•Utah Senator Mike Lee deletes controversial Minnesota shootings posts amid backlash
3·6 months ago“To attempt to politicize this tragedy is absolutely unacceptable. This rhetoric from elected officials is beyond dangerous and incites even more violence,” Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin said on the Senate floor Monday.
It is incredibly frustrating that “political” has become a word so divorced from it’s meaning that someone assassinating members of a political party, for their political affiliation, due to demonetization of that political party by the political party of the assassin, can not be a “political” issue.

World News@lemmy.world•G7 leaders: ‘Iran can never have a nuclear weapon’English
5·6 months agoKnowledge is eventually gained, someone would have built practical devices relating to nuclear fission, whether that was a bomb or a reactor.
Nazi Germany would not have done that in any time frame relevant to WWII. They specifically rejected aspects of atomic/quantum theory because they were tainted by “jewish science” which unknowingly set them back decades and sent them in the wrong direction. As much as they were obsessed with super weapons, they were very unscientific in their R&D.

142·7 months agoSome of that’s cultural momentum right? Like I don’t know how many pickles it takes to make a Peck of Pickles despite hours singing about it as a kid. There’s not a lot of reason sans-nostalgia to read an analog clock or drive a manual car. (I love my manual, but they’re not getting any less niche with EVs on the way.)
And everyone’s going to learn something the first time, some time. But it is just nuts that for some people that is apparently after getting a job with a Bachelor’s, somehow. So much time, money, and energy was spent in the 90s/00s having computer classes in schools and now so much of it has been cut because the people in charge are so out of touch that watching youtube on a device designed to be easily usable is indistinguishable from “technical skills”.

3·7 months agoProbably a me problem but kept having problems with that docker on unraid, it’s just in the community apps ‘store’. The vm seemed to just crash randomly.
I switched over to their B2 storage and just use rclone to an encrypted bucket and it’s ~<$5/mo which I’m good with. Biggest cost is if I let it run too often and it spends a bunch of their compute time listing files to see if it needs to update them.
The show Bones had a lot of weirdness, but I did appreciate that they consistently (at least the first few seasons when I was watching) stripped the bones down and even had a bug guy on staff to do it efficiently.

1·8 months agoF1 maxes out around 6/7Gs, but they’re not solely limited by tire friction, they’re effectively upside down planes that use their airfoils to get more traction. A lot of the difference is sideways Gs are harder. A pilot getting pushed down into their seat while banking through a turn can have more control than a driver getting pulled to the outside of the turn.
I think it gets some flak but I’ve been super happy with Unraid.
Migrated hardware by moving the usb drive over to the new system and it didn’t blink that everything but the HDDs was different. Just booted up and started the array and dockers. The JBOD functionality is great. Drive loss is just an excuse to add a bigger drive.
