i think most people just don’t care. we really need to spread the message. i think getting reddit users on piefed and lemmy is a good start. (like your username btw)

i want to spread the word so bad but i was banned from reddit. never knew why and i was very curious and surprised until i found out Paul McCartney was banned for posting pictures of his concert. so now i know it could have been anything.

favebook is another matter. i may have never had an account but i love tech history. mark and the gang built tools to scrape you other account back in the day an add the data to facebook. made it easy to switch. they also made it close to impossible to do the same to facebook. but it would require something like that to get people on to something else.

ok… soap box rant tangent time…

i am so pissed all the governments have been stepping up this age check anti vpn anti privacy push. in my magical completely unrealistic paradise world, we would have public service annpuncents about how to self host and be a part of the solution. i am so just disenchanted with society (not sure if thats the best term). i feel like it was only two years ago where i feel the bad stuff was selling our data to advertisers. sure the nsa kept illegally spying on us but the EFF would fight them in court.

now its so much worse :(

  • You hit the framing issue right on the head. People keep using code and project interchangeably. Code has never been able to be copyrighted. You cant copyright a for loop. I cant create a car class that has properties like make, model, year and copywrite it. Thats never been a thing. Thats why projects are copyrighted. An entire piece of work.

Now your Ship of Theseus has a debateable point. If every single line of code is ai written, does it become an ai project. I woild argue not because of himan involvement to get it there. I also dont see it happening. Not every line of code is replaced. But if it was, that would be a court challenge.

The advice depends on your reporting structure. If you have a mansger who is not the principal, then my advice is talk to your manager. They would know how to best navigate your corporate culture.

If the principal is your manager then unfortunately, its about being able to have a honest conversation. Ask him, “what would you do in my situation”

I work at a large non-tech company, you have heard of. We dont have rigid dev titles but i am the most senior tech person for our suite of applications. No one reports to me in an hr sense but dev decisions go through me.

Sure we have upper management pushing ai but we report to the internal business we support. So our decisions have to benefit the business. I just tell the other devs to explain how they used copolot to solve an issue in their annual review.

I use ai every day, for various things (not a lot of dev work) but your principal is trying to shoehorn something in for the sake of saying “ai”

I am sorry you have to go through such a review

We have a guy who joined us out of school and has been with us for a year. I trust his judgement. He is good at what he knows and comes to me for guidance. If he tells me he is going to fix an issue that has been bothering us and it doesnt conflict with a priority, i say go for it. Thata how it should be.
