So sad when that sign went down… was 100% planned.

sobriquet@aussie.zoneto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?English1·1 year agoAs a Australian, I tend to shy away from USAisms as a matter of course, but I 100% agree. English lacks a formal plural form of “you”, and while Australia has its own informal variation (“youse”), I’m a big fan of y’all.

sobriquet@aussie.zoneto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Self-hosted calendar that isn't Nextcloud and can send e-mail reminders, not just pop-upsEnglish211·1 year agoI know you said “no nextcloud”, but I often see posts from people who say nextcloud was overkill for them, but they don’t realise that almost every component of nextcloud can be uninstalled if you don’t want it. It can be pretty barebones if you want it to be.
I don’t see how you’re going to get away from the domain requirement, though, unless you’re just going to connect to your raw IP address? (And if you are, I didn’t think that nextcloud required a domain?)
Sorry I can’t be more helpful with a different solution, but hopefully someone out there knows of something that would suit your needs.

sobriquet@aussie.zoneto World News@lemmy.ml•Indefinite immigration detention ruled unlawful in landmark Australian high court decisionEnglish2·2 years agoI’m not measuring it, just quoting another source. I just wanted to find some numbers to try and understand how Sweden and Australia compare.
If it’s the entire country, then Australians still don’t have to deal with diversity because most of their minorities live away from the white people.
You make an excellent point.
sobriquet@aussie.zoneto World News@lemmy.ml•Indefinite immigration detention ruled unlawful in landmark Australian high court decisionEnglish2·2 years agoYeah, I wasn’t claiming it was a highly accurate source, and I was surprised that we rated so low based on those calculations, so thanks for the additional analysis. I just found it hard to believe that Sweden would be “dealing with diversity” more than Australia (or at least, in any significant way). Maybe there’s more nuance to Sweden’s numbers, too?
sobriquet@aussie.zoneto World News@lemmy.ml•Indefinite immigration detention ruled unlawful in landmark Australian high court decisionEnglish7·2 years agoAs an Australian, I honestly don’t disagree with you… but suggesting Sweden has more racial diversity than Australia?! From what i can see, Sweden has “6% diversity”, whereas Australia has 9%. Not a huge difference, granted, but completely different ballpark to USA (49%), and if this is your measure, Australia still “beats” Sweden.
sobriquet@aussie.zoneto politics @lemmy.world•America’s unique, enduring gun problem, explainedEnglish81·2 years ago18 dead Americans
… this time. The only thing “special” about this event was a few more dead than last time. There were 130 “mass shootings” in the first 3 months of this year alone. 48,830 gun deaths in 2021, and rising every year.
I know you weren’t saying this, but I think it’s important to state there’s a LOT more than 18 lives at stake here. I know these numbers won’t make any difference, but what people like this are really saying is that their “rights” are more important than the lives of all those people, and the many more to come.

Not sure about USA law, but in Australia we would call that “obtaining financial advantage by deception”. Otherwise known as “fraud”.
I saw them live years ago, and have the book. Can confirm.
