World News@lemmy.world•Israel War Cabinet member Benny Gantz files motion to dissolve parliamentEnglish
4·2 years agoRight before October 7th, Israel was in the midst of a huge political upheaval because of the looming judicial overhaul. Gantz was the leader of the opposition, and the main political rival of Netanyahu. The country was extremely divided, almost verging on civil war.
Right after October 7th, Israelis were focused on unity, survival, and combatting Hamas, Hezbollah, and other threats.
Gantz joined the war cabinet mostly to signal that whatever disagreements he and his party have with Netanyahu [of which there are many], he still prioritizes national unity in the face of existential threat.
This unity was fragile, and by now the political infighting in Israel is back in full swing.

131·2 years agoThe trailer for the series is full of comments criticizing Peacock (the publisher) for releasing this documentary and saying they’ll delete their Peacock accounts.
I’ve never heard of them before and I might open an account specifically to watch this! It looks genuinely good from the trailer

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•They say your body is the only instrument that doesn't require any lessons
1·2 years agoAre there actually?
My friend, I will give you the benefit of doubt and believe you when you say that this post’s purpose was to make fun of how shitty Twitter’s community notes are, and that is indeed an important topic to shed light on, so people won’t treat community notes as reliable.
However,
You can rest assured that a significant portion of the people who saw this post believed it as straight fact.
It is impossible to overstate how gullible people on the internet are, and how readily they will straight up believe conspiratorial BS, especially surrounding controversial topics like Israel.
That’s how Poe’s law works, and it is attitudes like yours that don’t take this shit seriously that end up inadvertently contributing to an environment full of libelous antisemitic conspiracies on the internet.
I beseech you to carefully consider this stuff if you ever plan to post such a thing again.
Was that a thing that actually happened?

World News@lemmy.world•Ukraine backers blast ‘double standard’ after allies rush to Israel’s defenseEnglish
12·2 years agoIt’s worth supplementing this with his earlier statement from 2 days ago:
“Ukraine condemns Iran’s attack on Israel using ‘Shahed’ drones and missiles. We in Ukraine know very well the horror of similar attacks by Russia, which uses the same ‘Shahed’ drones and Russian missiles, the same tactics of mass air strikes,”
“It is critical that the United States Congress make the necessary decisions to strengthen America’s allies at this critical time,” he says.

61·2 years agoAnother part of the answer is geographical. Jordan helped Israel intercept because their airspace is between Iran and Israel.
The distance between Russia and Ukraine is far shorter.

World News@lemmy.world•Ukraine backers blast ‘double standard’ after allies rush to Israel’s defenseEnglish
23·2 years agoZelensky’s tweet full text:
The entire world witnessed allied action in the skies above Israel and neighboring countries. It demonstrated how truly effective unity in defending against terror can be when it is based on sufficient political will.
Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Jordan acted together and with maximum efficiency.
Together, they prevented terror from prevailing. And they are working together, and in coordination with others, to prevent further escalation.
Israel is not a NATO member, so no action, such as triggering Article 5, was required. And no one was dragged into the war. They simply contributed to the protection of human life.
“Shaheds” in the skies above Ukraine sound identical to those over the Middle East. The impact of ballistic missiles, if they are not intercepted, is the same everywhere.
European skies could have received the same level of protection long ago if Ukraine had received similar full support from its partners in intercepting drones and missiles. Terror must be defeated completely and everywhere, not more in some places and less in others.
I thank everyone in the world, every leader and state, who truly assists us with air defense and missiles necessary to protect our skies, as well as training our pilots on F-16s. All of this already works and will continue to work to save lives.
However, we can now see how unity can work truly a hundred percent, and how almost a hundred percent of “Shaheds” and missiles can be intercepted. We will discuss it with our partners.

World News@lemmy.ml•Germany cancels pro-Palestine event, bars entry to Gaza war witness
12·2 years ago“A speaker was projected who was subject to a ban on political activity,” Berlin police said on social media. “There is a risk of a speaker being put on screen who in the past made antisemitic and violence-glorifying remarks. The gathering was ended and banned on Saturday and Sunday.”
The UK’s Jewish Chronicle reported last year that Abu Sitta spoke at a Beirut ceremony on the anniversary of the death of a founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Maher Al-Yamani.
The report said Abu Sitta wept as he “hailed the late terror group founder for his success at striking fear into the hearts of Israelis.”
Terrorists from the PFLP participated in the devastating October 7 attack.
On October 8, Abu Sitta promoted a social media post which said Gazans should “fight back and die in dignity” as they were “going to die anyway,” the UK’s Jewish News reported.

World News@lemmy.world•Israelis stage largest anti-government protest since the war in Gaza beganEnglish
3·2 years agoIt’s pretty likely that at least some are still alive, since they were probably held in the Hamas tunnels under Gaza, safe from bombs.
Hamas knows that living hostages are their strongest cards in negotitation, and they have historically gone to great lengths to secure this advantage.

World News@lemmy.world•Sri Lanka ends visas for hundreds of thousands of Russians staying there to avoid warEnglish
41·2 years agoI visited Sri Lanka a few months ago, I remember visiting Hikkaduwa (a beach town in the south-west) and there were tons of Russian tourists there. All the local businesses had signs in Russran, and some hotels rooms even had Russian flags hanging from the balconies.
I remeber talking to a Belarussian woman who has escaped Belarus when the war on Ukraine started because she was a political dissident and it was dangerous for her to stay. She’s been working there as a waitress ever since she arrived.
