Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What's the laziest way to create a website that looks really nice and is maintainable?English
598·3 months agoI would recommend learning basic HTML CSS and making a website without external tools. This way the maintenance cost is 0 as your website will likely work forever.
Write all your HTML first then your CSS, it will be easier this way. Use vanilla JS if you need to but avoid external libraries , same for php.
The claims are that they were working with/for hamas according to documents they found.
I didn’t read all the reports and may have missed something but I don’t have the energy to find and debunk Israël claims. The fact remains : you don’t get to drone bomb humanitarian convoys and whatever justification that come afterward is meaningless.
She has been released and stated that the flotilla crew ( her included ) have been subject to mistreatment and abuse. Israel is now accussing the flotilla to be part of hamas.
Snopes article : https://www.snopes.com/news/2025/10/07/greta-thunberg-israel-arrest/
TL:DR israël commit atrocities yet again and try to say it’s due to hamas again.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Any FLOSS alternative's to Ground News?English
555·8 months agoHi, I want to warn you about services claiming to sell “unbiased” advice : Ground news is biased, their alignment of left and right is subjective as all politics is.
Are you going to neat-pick a point each time rather than addressing my argument as a whole ?
I’m french and I can tell you in a software developement context AI is worse than existing tool like deepL, maybe it work better in afrikaans and if that’s the case good we finally have an use case ! sadly being ok at translating thing is not what thoose model are selled on and even if it were : it’s still not worth the cost
I’ll stop responding, no one is reading that far of a comment and you are not responding to my arguments in way that’s productive.
Once again it’s not enough to justify the cost.
LLM translation are hazardous at best and we already a lot of translation tools already. Templating systems are older than me and even so no one in their right mind should trust a non deterministic tool to draft documents.
Voice recognition is not limited to siri, I just used the most know exemple. Local assitant have existed long before LLMs and didn’t require this much ressources. You are once again moving the goal post. Find one real world use that offset the downside.
I ask for an example making up for the downside everyone as to pay.
so, no ! A better shutter puller or a maybe marginally better vocal assitant is not gonna cut it. And again that’s stuff siri and domotic tools where able to do since 2014 at a minimum.
we should allow lead in paint its easier to use /s
You are deliberatly missing my point which is : gen AI as an enormous amount of downside and no real world use.
But we could do vocal assistants well before LLMs (look at siri) and without setting everything on fire.
And seriously, I asked for something that’s worth all the down side and you bring up clippy 2.0 ???
Where are the MANY exemples ? why are LLMs/genAI company burning money ? where are the companies making use of of the suposedly many uses ?
I genuily want to understand.
Give me one real world use that is worth the downside.
As dev I can already tell you it’s not coding or around code. Project get spamed with low quality nonsensical bug repport, ai generated code rarely work and doesn’t integrate well ( on top on pushing all the work on the reviewer wich is already the hardest part of coding ) and ai written documentation is ridled with errors and is not legible.
And even if ai was remotly good at something it still the equivalent of a microwave trying to replace the entire restaurant kitchen.
How people dare not like the automatic bullshit machine pushed down their troat…
Seriously, genrative AI acomplishment are :
- Making mass spam easier
- Burning the planet
- Making people lose their job and not even being a decent solution
- Make all search engine and information sources worse
- Creating an economic bubble that will fuckup the economy even harder
- Easing mass surveillance and weakening privacy everywhere

1·9 months agoThe same way public petition work, if a law is needed people will campain around the issue and among thoose people some will draft legislation that could be made into law.

2·9 months agoIt’s hard to conceive a perfect system but to paint broad stokes :
Direct democracy mean that the final say is always in the hand of people rather than elected politicians. That doesn’t mean they aren’t people whose job is to draft up and propose legislation ! But thoose people can’t decide instead of everyone and have to listen to specialist and concerned people. To vote a law they have to convince and prove to everyone that it will be a net positive.
Think about it, how many time did you see senators that don’t know what a computer is vote laws that reshape internet for the worse. Or think about how leftist in the US are stuck with a center-right party ( Democrats ) that only listen to their donors.
Having direct democracy doesn’t mean that everyone has to be politicaly litterate or that legislation specialist stop existing. Ideally it’s a system that reward people solving problems and discourage self interested politicians.
Of course they are a lot of obvious flaw in what I said ( the first being how to decide what people mean ), it’s an ideal after all and I’m sure that there is a better way to define it. But that’s the neat thing about direct democracy, we can all find something better together. ( rather than beg a politicians whose only skill is being elected ).

Props to you for fighting it since 2016, the plan bill look very nice !
