Programming@programming.dev•Just going to pour this out here, it'll be fine ⛽
11·3 days agoWonder how many of those courses are AI-generated themselves…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•When did Cory Doctorow stop thinking that Jeff Bezos was cool?
32·5 days agoI don’t know about him specifically, but I’d say it’s a shift in opinion that many of us went through. 2008 was a very different world. Amazon wasn’t quite the evil empire it is today. It was one of the only usable online shops, leagues ahead of almost everything else available.
My company has 2 CEOs. One of them doesn’t ever really talk about AI. The other one is personally obsessed with the topic. His picture on Teams is AI generated and every other day, he posts some random AI tutorial or news into work channels. His client presentations are mostly written by ChatGPT. But luckily, nothing is being forced on us developers. The company is very hands-off in general (some may say disorganized) and we can pretty much use any tools and methods we choose, as long as we deliver good results. I personally use AI only occassionally, mostly for quick prototyping in languages and frameworks I’m unfamiliar with. None of the other devs are very enthusiastic about AI either.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Do you have any tips on how to look for art created entirely by humans?
8·11 days agoBrowsing various art platforms, when I see a user where I’m not entirely sure if their art is AI (usually I think I can tell immediately though), I check how old their profile is. If it’s older than 2024, I check how their art from before that year looks. If there hasn’t been a sudden and radical shift in style and skill, I consider the art human-made. Otherwise, likely AI.
That method might be a tad unfair to artists who are only starting out now, but I don’t know of any better way.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are mundane actions we get to do everyday with technology that would be a superpower to people from before say.. the 1600s?
24·25 days agoTons of things. Instantly talking to a person the next town over, let alone the other side of the world. Turning on a light source whenever we want. Freezing a moment in time by taking a photograph. Etc
The pedant in me also feels the need to point out that the 1600s weren’t medieval though.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is it called "male loneliness epidemic"? Dont women feel lonely too? Wtf?
232·1 month agoSociety expects men to be “tough” and not show too many emotions. So men are less likely to have someone they can emotionally lean on and with whom they can talk about their feelings, even if they have many friends. Obviously it doesn’t mean that women can’t feel lonely. You wouldn’t go into a discussion about femicides and be like “Don’t men get murdered too? Wtf?”, right?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I recently stopped degrading and am starting to think, is there any advice on how to avoid falling into degradation again?
19·1 month agoDegrading in terms of physical capabilities? Mental capacity? Hearing? I think you’ll need to be a bit more specific here if you want any useful replies.

politics @lemmy.world•Donald Trump calls on Republicans to vote to release Epstein files
34·1 month agoSo what exactly is preventing them from releasing not just redacted but heavily edited “Epstein files” where they removed any hint of Trump and added a few additional democrat names for good measure? They’ve certainly had enough time to create something like that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it true that letting your phone charge to 100% is bad?
34·1 month ago“Bad” is relative, but it does reduce the long-term lifespan of your battery. Ideally you should charge to 80%, but if you actually need the 100%, I wouldn’t worry about it either.
I find myself becoming less and less interested in staying in the industry I’m currently working in for the rest of my life. Problem is, I don’t have any other qualifications. So I guess it could start working on acquiring new ones while I’m still young enough to do so, but I’d need both a clear idea on what other career I want to pursue and the motivation to leave my currently pretty comfortable position in life. I have neither.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are your preferred alternatives to Amazon?
9·2 months agoThere isn’t a single site I’d consider an alternative. These days I mostly order from specialized online shops for different product categories, so for example electronics from Alternate, video games from netgames etc. Price comparison sites are often a good place to find these shops. When available I buy directly from manufacturers as well, especially clothing. Occasionally I also order stuff from AliExpress.
I also found that I buy less things in general since ditching Amazon. I guess the additional hassle of buying through other shops makes it easier to realize I don’t actually need many of the things I might have otherwise purchased.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is it possible the US is quietly supplying Ukraine with something as good or better than the recent missiles they rejected Ukraine's request to supply?
19·2 months agoThat strategy sounds way too advanced for Trump’s mind, so I really don’t think so.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Aren't we basically morons if we elect another president?
1·2 months agoSo you think with Harris in power in 2025, there would also be unidentified policemen roaming the streets, disappearing non-white people into unmarked vans? There would still be military deployed to cities across the US due to a fictional crime wave? Universities would still be denied funding for refusing to discriminate based on race or gender? I don’t think so.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Aren't we basically morons if we elect another president?
4·2 months agoIf you really can’t see any difference in the methods employed and the scale of repression between the recent (!) democrat and republican governments, I don’t know what to tell you. Bringing up events from 50+ years ago like the red scare seems quite irrelevant.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Aren't we basically morons if we elect another president?
51·2 months agoYou’re probably right that fundamental change is needed. But you should still think about under which president those changes are easier to achieve. Hint: It’s probably not the one who’s perfectly willing to send the military after his political enemies. Also remember that if you don’t elect another president, everybody else still will. The system won’t improve by you not participating in it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever traveled outside of America? (Not to Canada or Mexico)
372·2 months agoYes, quite a lot. I’ve never actually been to America though.
How would we handle cases of tyranny where the government controls all militia?
How are you handling the case of tyranny right now? Haven’t seen the guns make a ton of difference so far. I don’t see how they would either, as it would be going against the largest military in the world.

I don’t really see the similarity, the two letters at the end? If so, seriously? I see it as a lighthearted way to refer to AI in a way that makes fun of people who think it’s this amazing technology of the future, when it’s really just a fancy statistics machine that can’t separate between truth and fiction.
