  • Several democratic governors sued over the tariffs. So far the court has declared the tariffs to be illegal, but is for some reason allowing them to be collected while the case is appealed.

The gov of Maine sued him for withholding federal funds over having trans athletes and won.

The NYTimes has a pretty good article tracking the myriad of suits against him. They mention that 184 of them “have at least temporarily paused the administration’s initiatives.” https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/us/trump-administration-lawsuits.html

A handful of senators and state legislators have attempted to visit some of the prisons/ICE detention facilities, starting with Chris Van Hollen, who flew to El Salvador to see Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

David Hogg is attempting to primary the old do-nothing dinosaurs in the party.

I think right now we’re all looking to California to see what they do in a literal military standoff with Trump. I don’t know if it will be enough, but I don’t think it will be nothing.

  • Ohhh. As someone who also went through an editing program recently, yeah, I think AI has taken a lot of those jobs. Are you a member of any editing guilds like the EFA (if in the US)? They seem to have more one-off jobs for freelancers, but there was a regional guild I was part of that posted more corporate editing jobs, which maybe sounds more like what you’re looking for. But right after AI got big it quickly became apparent that even the experienced freelancers were having a hard time getting steady work. I wish you luck. At least you have a good chunk of experience. I gave up because I didn’t have any.

  • This is the latest email the Harris team sent out. I have no idea why they think Trump et al would ever be “impressed” by any number.

"In just a few days, the DNC closes the books on the most important FEC fundraising deadline since the last election.

When this deadline ends, they are legally required to report how much money they’ve raised. The number of donations they’ve received will also be public.

Everyone will be watching: the press, the Trump administration, and more.

They’re looking to see how much grassroots enthusiasm there is for stopping Trump’s agenda, and these numbers are a big part of that.

If they file a big report with lots of donations, Republicans will know they’ll face stiff opposition when Congress tries to pass Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires, paid for by cuts to lifesaving programs.

If the DNC files a weak report, then the Trump administration and the press will see there’s no pushback to what they’re trying.

So this is a big deal. And it’s why the DNC is hoping for lots and lots of donations before this deadline ends."

  • Look, communicating awkwardly doesn’t make you a horrible person. I think part of it is you have a confidence problem. It sounds like you always cowtow to your coworkers’ reactions, even going so far as apologizing when you haven’t objectively done anything wrong (your responses don’t seem that weird, but maybe it is the way you say things). It seems odd to me that anyone would be offended by an offer to go home early, unless you’re making it seem like you specifically don’t want them to be around.

At the end of the day, your coworkers are just people with their own issues and imperfections. They are probably not experts at communication either, so don’t treat them as such. I would not take any social cues from coworker 1.

You may not be able to change the dynamic at work, so my advice is to find a way to socialize outside of work (with people who actually like & respect you!). That way you won’t have to rely on your workplace for those needs.

  • One time it snowed a foot or two in Seattle. I had a set of studded tires on a little Toyota Tercel and I swear I was the only fucker driving around. Uphill, downhill, cruising down the lumpy hard-packed freeway, didn’t have any problems. Besides, if you get stuck in a Tercel you can just lift the whole rear of the car out of the snow with a second person. I really miss that car.

  • You win, lol. That’s terrible.

My mom used to be a great cook but now she just makes everything in the microwave, often in plastic containers. This year she seemed to forget half the things she was going to cook. We had plans to make beignets and homemade eggnog (we didn’t). For Christmas dinner she made this elaborate meal plan and then changed everything at the last minute. She somehow didn’t think about starting the rice until the chicken was done cooking… then suggested we have nasty precooked pouch rice. For Christmas dinner. It would be different if she didn’t cook much or know how, but cooking is her whole thing! I’m honestly baffled. I’ve decided I’m just going to volunteer to cook the entire dinner next time. I’ve been a professional cook before. I can make something fancy, even if I’m the only one who will appreciate it.
