FauxLiving@lemmy.worldto politics @lemmy.world•‘We Are All Afraid’: Republican Senator Admits Colleagues Are Terrified of Being Punished for Criticizing Trump125·2 days ago“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”
You took an oath. Being afraid isn’t an excuse.
We expect 19 year old soldiers to run into fire and destruction to honor their oaths. We expect no less from our elected representatives.

Outrageous comments are heavily rewarded in public social media where everyone is pseudo-anonymous. At the same time, almost nobody wants to be the person on the receiving end of outrageous takes.
We’re rewarding the wrong behaviours.

They only need to create law that can be arbitrarily enforced and then enforce that law on your enemies.

People are so used to being able to instantly ignore anybody that they never develop the skills to deal with people disagreeing with them or having support an argument.
It’s a self-reinforcing cycle.

Trump is literally sending people into slavery and, in typical Trump fashion, he’s losing money on the deal by paying El Salvador for accepting them.
He tweeted once and is therefore canceled because social media doesn’t understand nuance or context
It’s literally a nothing situation that social media, in its drive to find outrage in every single thing, has blown completely out of proportion.

Social media users love to clutch their pearls.
Treating it like it’s exploitative let’s them get their little dose of outrage, it doesn’t matter if it matches reality or not.
Despite the fact that, as you pointed out, to do so often requires that they assume some pretty offensive things (like, “a 19-20 year old is only good for sex and housework”).

Nothing antisemitic about it. Israel has the means and capabilities of running influence operations in a way that Palestine doesn’t.
“Jewish bankers”, however, is a pretty common antisemitic trope so I don’t think you’re wrong about this specific commenter

It isn’t that bad, yet, on Lemmy but it gets to the point where people just scream past each other and because of things like default ranking comments by vote instead of a timeline whoever can get/bot the most votes wins and the other person is cast into the oblivion of “Click here to see more comments”.
