There’s definitely the odd deranged dog owner who thinks it a good idea to – instead of cleaning up the dog shit – package it such that it does not ever decay.
I’ve got a tendency to pick these up and throw them out because otherwise I’ll be looking at them for months.

If you want to spend slightly more, go for one with a hub dynamo. Those have way less resistance, and don’t have a tendency to stop working in snowy weather.
this sort of really briefly works if the observer is nearer the new location. Light from the new location reaches the observer before the lack-of-light reached the observer from the old location.
still would only work for the tiniest amount of time and confuse no-one, but then this isn’t hard sci-fi.
