Programming@programming.dev•Welcome Dan Williams, new LibreOffice Developer focusing on UI/UX 🥳
5·5 months agoIt is such a powerfull software and capable of so much, at least LibreOffice Calc, which I use a lot. But the UI doesn’t keep up with it, a lot feels hidden. And that is a shame, because it prevents new users to see that it is a great alternative.

10·5 months agoThat doesn’t make you an idiot, instead it indicates how bad the UI of LibreOffice is.
And they hired someone with a focus on the MacOS-Version, so don’t hold your breath for any improvements in the foreseeable future on other platforms.

41·5 months agoI think you and many of the downvoters are missing my point:
If the default setting leads me to an UI, where I, an average user, needs so long to find such a basic function, then the UI is bad. And I am very patient, but if you want to convince the average MS Office user, that Linux + LibreOffice is an alternative, then it needs to be better then this.
And I am obviously disappointet that they hired someone with a focus on MacOS and not Linux, where a big UI/UX overhaul would be needed. It sais in the article, that the new hire will also look at overall improvements beside MacOS, but that won’t be enough to polish the UX to the point where people would prefer LibreOffice over MS Office.

6·5 months agoMaybe that’s a point that Dan Williams can address: The default presets are important. With your UI I would have found it much faster, because it is where I would expect it to be.
Tantacrul/Martin Keary has some nice videos about how he redesigned Audacity and Muse Score. The point about how important sane presets are comes up quite often.

91·5 months agoFor me it was under Format - Page Style, burried in some long dropdown menu. It is absolutly not user friendly, if you are new to the software or don’t use it very often.
I needed one minute to find it and I kind of knew what I was searching for (a window with all the settings for the page). The UI should be made in a way where the slowest user (apparently me) will find such essential functions fast, like in every other writing software (MS Office, OnlyOffice, Google shit, …).
So for me the UI of LibreOffice is a bad one.

615·5 months agoMeanwhile the state of the UI/UX on Linux: I dare you to rotate your paper in LibreOffice Writer to
portraitlandscape in under a minute, if you haven’t recently used the function.

2·7 months agoIf you use Nextcloud, install the App Memories and you will have the same functions as Immich plus all the upload functions of Nextcloud.
But if you are not interested in all the Nextcloud functionalities (including contact and calendar sync, musicserver, filesharing, etc) and just want picture management, Immich is the better choice.

5·1 year agoThere is always emacs with org-roam.
Org-roam is kind of a wiki, you write your notes with all the formatting power of an org-file and you can link to other notes you have written.
Of course everything is searchable, with tags, without tags, however you want.
BUT: it takes time to get used to the shortcuts, and it takes a lot of time to configure everything how you like it.
The result is worth it.
Edit: I use Nextcloud to sync my notes accross my devices. On the smartphone there seems to be the App OrgNote available, but I haven’t checked it out, as I don’t use my smartphone that much.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•I don't get the love for Nextcloud - alternative for just files?English
8·1 year agoTotally different for me:
- NC-calendar syncs two different calendars (work and private) accross all my devices.
- NC Photos with Memories organizes 2 TB of photos and has all the functions Immich has.
- NC Password Manager syncs my Passwords
- I share big files with my clients via NC and photo albums to friends and family.
- NC syncs and organizes different Input-folders for my paperless-ngx-server.
- I update NC with a small script, works every time
So it replaces at least 5 different Programs. And it’s 80 % private use, 20 % for my business. Not too big, not too clunky, just the right tool.

4·1 year agoI installed the version from F-Droid-Store, Version 0.6-something. The main problem for me was, that you couldn’t download single songs, only complete albums - and I gave up on the App.
This post made me install the 0.9-beta-APK (directly from github), and it already fullfills all my wishes, you can download single songs now! And I love that you can filter for your favorites and download them all at once. Really looking forward to further process, it’s so promissing.

Some people from eastern parts of germany go with stuff like “Dreiviertel 3” - three-quarters 3 - 14:45 Uhr.
A good way of keeping the time-information secret, I am certainly too slow to translate that.
