Australia Post is taking the extraordinary step of immediately suspending many forms of shipping to the United States, as a Trump administration tariff deadline approaches on Friday.

They’re just temporarily suspended until Aug 29. They don’t want in-flight packages to arrive without duty paid and have to be returned. When they resume delivery, all new packages will have duty collected at the time of sending.

That said, it’ll kill overseas direct to consumer businesses aimed at the US. No one wants to pay $80-200 per package for packages valued under $800.

Australia Post’s decision is effective immediately, from August 26, and is until “further notice”.

The duty cannot be collected in Australia. Under US law, the payment must be made in US ports.

At least for the export companies I’ve dealt with, it’s collected by the company from the receiver ahead of time and paid at the port.
