    Do what you gotta do to be legal in your state, but get fucking strapped, learn safety, learn the manual of arms for whatever weapon you choose, learn your local laws. Practice, practice with your heart slamming, practice tough conditions. As with any other martial art, you have to have develop unthinking reflexes. If you can’t react without thinking about it, you’re a danger to yourself and others.

    Yes, guns and ammo are more expensive than many think. You need to put at least 1,000 rounds through your weapon just to break it in, understand what it will and will not do, get confident*. Yes, it’s a steep training and learning curve. Having said that, if you can consistently hit a 10" steel target at 30’-40’ with a pistol round, good enough, happy camper.

    I do NOT expect most people to go this far, no judgement if you won’t. If you refuse to arm yourself, my respect is unconditional in this regard. But if you’re going to carry a weapon, these things are the bare minimum required. A pistol in your closet “just in case” is worse than useless.

    * Note on weapon confidence. I FINALLY figured out what’s wrong my with 9mm Ruger. Sometimes the first round no go bang, have to chamber another. WTF? Still don’t know exactly what’s wrong, but that only happens after I take it home disassemble it for cleaning. See what I mean about leaning your chosen weapon? And make no mistake, it’s a fucking weapon. Calling it a gun dilutes the sense of what you’re actually handling.
