So basically the history of tipping comes from post-slavery times. When frankly whites were trying to keep blacks down. It has a terrible history, a terrible purpose. They were trying to not have to pay people who deserved a living wage.
So while I’m not certain, I think the practice should be strictly illegal, it certainly is bullshit. So I have a hard time disagreeing with you LOL
I’m an American. I was born here. I’m used to the taxes and the tipping and all of that stuff.
I don’t find it confusing, sure. But I’m also used to it.
But as an analogy, imagine that the posted speed limit wasn’t the actual speed limit. Well, in fact, it sort of works like that because you can usually but not always go 5 to 10 mph over.
But let’s say that it was a little confusing. That it was more like 20%. Or it depended on some sort of. I don’t know how to make this analogy work, but maybe sometimes it was 20%, sometimes it was 25%, sometimes it was 15%. The point is that having to calculate that all of a sudden when you never have before is difficult and a pain in the ass.
And if you come from a country with a speed limit, is the speed limit or it’s like always like five over would be safe or something like that. This percent thing is bullshit to you because you’ve never had to deal with this stupidity before. Doesn’t matter that the natives have no worries about it, this is weird and different and bullshit and there’s no good reason for it.
Not the greatest analogy, but if you try and use it to you know get an idea of how they feel about it. I hope it helps a little bit
It’s worse than that. It comes from racism and slavery. When you started having folks freed up from slavery who were doing jobs like being a waiter, Rich folk set the system up under the guise of saying good service gets good tips, but really it allowed them not to pay them. And so they had to work really hard for whatever tips they could get.
And that basically continues today. The system is absolutely bullshit.

The problem is that the current two parties have so much money coming in from our oligarchs. That’s why the Republicans have turned to fascism because they were even more susceptible to corruption than a lot of the Democrats.
I don’t know if there’s a single Republican that isn’t beholden to our oligarchs. Maybe there is but I’m just not aware.
I am aware of a couple like AOC and Bernie, who as far as I can tell are really not beholden to the oligarchs.
And that’s also true of this new social Democratic movement.
The problem is that the oligarchs gives so much power to those that they’re able to corrupt that it is an uphill battle, even with the support.
The propaganda countering real progress is so strong because it is so friendly supported by our oligarch.
So I just don’t find a statement like yours fair. Because it’s such an uphill battle and an unfair battle. If it was a fair battle I would agree. They should be able to win if they get support.
But even if they get support, the oligarchs are able to throw so much money against them that I don’t know if we can take over the party. I hope they can but I don’t know if they can

Republicans obstruct, which is so much easier to do in our system. And yet, Democrats have still passed some leglslation that’s helpful. Republicans haven’t.
You easily see the corruption across the entire system. What you don’t see is that it still matters, and that the parties are not the same.
That’s the thing. Obstruction is so much easier. So Republicans have been able to stop most of the progress we would have made.
Because unfortunately as much as the “both sides” thing is generally bullshit, our oligarchs have corrupted the entire system. The government mostly only works for them now. That being said Democrats are still the only party doing anything for us. Meh

They’re certainly enhanced and it’s related probably but I’m not sure it’s a 1:1 thing exactly. But far closer to the truth than things like “Democrats just don’t do anything”.

I hate where we are as well. I’m 50 and remember when it was just starting to go bad. It sucks.
But I will always vote.
A bit short-sighted, perhaps, when oligarchs control the media and encourage the “both sides” bullshit so people won’t vote, and right-wing media has gone for decades convincing a third of the populace to vote for fascism.
If we were able to break through that propaganda, voting would give us a supermajority of at least Democrats, and some number of actual progressives such that we might be able to get shit done.
That said, giving up is certainly not the answer.
But if they had truly implemented an earth-shattering transformation, then surely at least some faint tremors would have registered with the public. Instead, Biden’s popularity plunged early in his presidency and never recovered. There was no uptick in Biden’s approval rate produced by trustbusting, no green shoots that promised to blossom with more time.
Perhaps oligarchal control of the media means that when progress is actually made, it is not communicated to the populace.
Neo-Brandeisian ideas have drawn at least some support from Trump world.
This is probably necessary if we have any hope of re-taking our country back from fascism and oligarchy.
Well, I don’t know. The author of the piece definitely doesn’t agree, and I’m not sure if I do or not. I do know I personally think the root of our problems in the US are primarily the oligarchs. Fascists are a close second, with Evangelicals a close third.
