  • They had the opportunity to prevent him from running again.

Literally all they had to do was have 16 or so of them say one word, “guilty,” at either of his impeachments, and we never would have had to hear from Trump again as a candidate, and he’d probably also actually be serving time in prison for his felony convictions.

It still infuriates me. Sixteen words - just breaths and some vocal chord flexes - away from being on such a drastically better timeline, including for the republicans themselves. But they were too cowardly for even that.

  • Yes, we’re so deep in corruption that somehow this is invisible to people.

Trump gave his son’s former partner an official role paid for by tax dollars after the son dumped the partner, in what appears to be a “no hard feelings but go away” payoff.

I get that ambassadorships are one of the most often used for political favors, but this is not even arm’s-length politics, it’s certainly for Trump’s family’s illicit self-interest. A functional government would investigate this at the very least and it would be grounds for scandal, and real political consequences for Trump at best.

  • Sorry, but that doesn’t really make sense. Here are your options:

You don’t vote at all, or vote third party: If you totally sit out the vote, you are having no effect, or are voting for the status quo by omission.

You vote republican: You are voting for the worst outcome.

You vote democrat: You are voting harm reduction.

    Now to be clear:

    1. “Harm reduction” is not just about you. It’s about LGBTQ people, it’s about people who are on ACA who will die due to continued cuts, it’s about immigrants who are going to be abused. Even if you think the democrats are “fascism-lite” (which I think is severely reductionist), you are severely downplaying, to the point that it mirrors GOP lack of empathy, the harms others are experiencing due to your refusal to vote for harm reduction.

    2. In the primary, please, please vote for the most progressive person you can find, and let corporate democrats eat all the dicks. But in the general, please don’t just think of yourself and your emotional response of “screw them all!” Because “them all” includes your allies.

P.S.: Also, what is the point of downvoting good faith discussion? It really is not nice.

  • While CBS as an organization is losing trustworthiness, it’s important to remember that there are still journalists with standards and ethics that pre-date the Skydance purchase working there.

It’s reasonable to be skeptical about anything with Bari Weiss or the Ellisons’ fingerprints on it, but credible reporting will still keep coming through as long as there are people with backbones there to do it. Supporting them and giving their stories clicks is still ethical as a viewer/audience/citizen, and also creates at least some data to show internally that real journalism is more profitable than fake journalism.

  • Bergal stopped his car after he was “struck by one of the bullets or fragments superficially in the neck,” Charles said. “We arrested him, rendered first aid, and then took him to the hospital.”

Body camera footage from the New York City police officers who responded to the shooting show they were the ones who transported Bergal to the hospital to receive medical care.

So the story is barely 24 hours old, and ICE already is caught in a provable lie - that they took him to the hospital. As we’ve seen from their prior murders, ICE has a history of not only not taking victims to the hospital, but actively refusing to let bystanders administer medical care.

It’s not clear why they even say “weaponized his vehicle” anymore since ICE saying that is historically proof more that the victim didn’t rather than did. I suppose they need some soundbite, even if eventually provably false, for bots and nazis on X to signal-boost.
