World News@lemmy.world•RFK Jr.’s Anti-Vax Nonsense Has Helped Spread Measles to MexicoEnglish
12·3 days agoIt probably is more like: “Government forces the people to take some evil vaccines due to those scientists, who lie to you. Also those evil scientists are telling the government to stop us emitting greenhouse gases, dump chemical waste and so forth. Also the shut downs during Covid were pushed for by those evil scientists.”
So less wanting to actually spread the disesas and more following science hurts our bottom line.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•European States Claim Control Over Russia's Shadow Fleet in the Baltic Sea - MilitarnyiEnglish
7·18 days agoOil price is set by supply and demand. Demand is still unfortunatly slowly growing. So if you cut supply, by for example stopping Russian oil exports, you then increase the oil price. The bad part in that is that it probably leads to Russia being able to somehow export oil around those sanctions(like via land to China for example) and actually make more money with it then with sanctions applied. This is made worse by Europe being oil importers, so a high oil price hurts Europe.
Right now a number of things come together. Trump caused a recession in the US(lower oil demand), EVs are growing in sales(lower oil demand), Venezuela Maduro stuff(higher oil supply), OPEC increases oil production(higher oil supply), Trump makes it easier to frack in the US(higher oil supply) and so forth. The only thing increasing the oil price right now, is a potential invasion of Iran. However even that does not seem that likely. In other words cutting off Russian oil supply, is currently possible.
Then Trump seized a Russian tanker and nothing happened and Greenland happened. Therefore Europe knows the risk of doing it are lower then thought and they have to take risks to make sure they do not depend on the US, if Russia starts a war against the EU directly.
Oh and Russia looks weak right now. The economy has some serious problems, so this is likely to really hurt.

World News@lemmy.world•Falling birth rate in France: 'We may be witnessing a period of very rapid and highly gendered social change'English
2·18 days agoIt is already hitting hard and not just Western countries. The fertility rate is below replacement on every continent besides Africa already. Countries like China and Thailand have shrinking populations today. The global fertility rate was at 2.3 in 2023 according to the UN.

World News@lemmy.world•IMF prepares for global run on US dollarEnglish
4·19 days ago2/3 of global trade is done in US dollars. However a lot of that has currency risk, like say Chinese companies paying their Chinese workers in yuan. So if the dollar looses value compared to other currencies, the old contracts can lead to exporters selling their products for less then they are worth. That is not a good situation to be in for a lot of companies.
In other words Northern Rock would be a joke compared to this.

World News@lemmy.world•Venezuela’s acting president says she has had “enough” of US ordersEnglish
48·20 days agoShe is a hardcore Communist. Her father was a guerilla leader in the Venezuelan jungle. It was obvious to anybody, that she would betray Trump at the first oppurtunity. However being able to sell oil to the US and pay some money to Trump directly via some Qatari payment scheme is still much better then having full blown sanctions on Venezuela. Rodriguez is also a realists and understands that this is actually an oppurtunity to strengthen the country, if it is played smartly.

1·24 days agoThe main purpose of the board is to oversee the Gaza ceasefire. So this will probably lead to a bunch of Muslim leaders openly supporting Israel in some votes. To be fair they do not care and many openly do very similar things themself or even took part in it like Egypt. Still the population of the countries does care and mostly supports Palestine.

World News@lemmy.world•‘No other option’: inside the refugee camp for trans Americans fleeing TrumpEnglish
2·26 days agoSure, but there are a lot of countries, which are either cheap enough to retire to or are willing to accept qualified US workers. Also a lot of Americans have some relatively recent migrant background and might apply for citizenship by decent from some countries.

First of all, it is not that relevant anymore, but Trump makes for great news stories, which create a lot of clicks. We are probably at the point, that the US needs to invade Ukraine to end that war for Russia.
Other then that the US still sanctions Russia, which is helpful. They also sell weapons to Europe and especially Ukraine, which are hard to replace(Patriot missiles for example). Also it is really useful to have the US at least pretend to want to defend Europe. Then you have the massive economic war going on and that actually hurts Europe.
So Europe seems to kiss Trumps ass, while working pretty hard on alternatives. Part of that is financing Ukrainian drones to blow up tankers and other export facilities to replace sanctions. European weapons industry needs more capacity and some capabilities to US weapons, which is being worked on right now(for Patriot that is more Aster missiles for SMAP/T and Iris-t SLX for example). As for the tariff war, we currently see the massive trade deals with Mercosur and India to replace the US somewhat.
