World News@lemmy.world•Scientists detect a sharp acceleration in global warmingEnglish
1·8 days agoPlastic bottles are a good example. They are much lighter, so far less handling and transportation cost. Having multiple shapes for various products/companies makes it harder for collection etc. of glass. And glass simply takes a shit ton of energy (natural gas) to produce and recycle. So the climate cost is not simply “yes glass is better for the climate”. It only is when it gets refilled a ton of times and the transportation is only short distances (so when there is a high population density)
Anyway, when halve stop buying cheap shit they don’t even need, we will not only save that many resources but also avoid all of the trash that it inevitably ends up being a few years later. Companies would not continue production of the things.

22·10 days agoEvery single person is part of the problem. Some more, some less. Corporations do not harm the environment because they are inherently bad. They do it because people (all of them!) love stuff.

32·10 days agoHuman nature is the reason. Regardless of the system we live in. People want more, better, etc. and feel important/strong/rich/… It has always been like that. Heck, even monkeys display such things.

2·10 days agoCorrect. Convenience is just too important. Also status symbols because people just want to be seen as big/successful/important/… regardless if that damages things.

Indeed, what an odd post.

71·1 month agoThere is no secret group of rich people voting what to do next. Individual assholes is all it takes. Also, people doing this do not need to be wealthy at all. This is often a way into power.

11·1 month agoThe reasons are far more sinister than someone’s ego. People (not just males) do these things to gain/stay in power or similar gains (monetary, followers, …).

11·2 months agoI am pretty sure I can grasp exactly how to scale up the production of some chemical as a chemical engineer doing exactly that as a job. Bulk production of chemicals is EASY to scale compared to such discrete manufacturing.
The level of precision requires tuning the casing. If you think that is not precision, okay, whatever precision means for you is not relevant. It is hard to scale. You can not simply cast them continuously and be done with it.

1·2 months agoYes, for those you need quality steel and machine it with precision, every single one. You can not simply make a larger reactor to scale production 10x.

21·2 months agoExplosives are dirt cheap and easy to manufacture on an industrial scale. If they put less somewhere, cost or availability is not the reason.
