Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Moving from Cloudflare tunnels for media streaming, first plan didn't work out due to double NATEnglish
5·1 year agoget a VPS, run Tailscale and NPM on it and switch to Jellyfin
Keep in mind that VPSs will charge for bandwidth, which adds up quickly when you’re streaming.
One suggestion I haven’t seen mentioned is contacting your ISP. Sometimes you can get a dedicated IP, although you might have to pay for it.
Alternatively you might just break down and pay for Plex Pass. I know that goes against the Lemmy philosophy to the very core, but for all its issues, Plex is still way ahead of Jellyfin in terms of features, UI/UX, etc. Jellyfin will get there, and I’m ready to switch the day that Plex becomes unusable, but that hasn’t happened yet.
You didn’t either huh?
Wow both of those look really useful, thanks for sharing!

1·2 years agoSystem Informer is a nice, more modern take on Process Explorer. My favorite feature is the filter which supports RegEx and searches the process name, command args, path, etc. Really nice for monitoring a few important processes.

If you’re on Win 11, use NanaZip. It’s a fork with better integration with Windows 11’s crappy conext menu.
Caffeine
If you have PowerToys this is built in now.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Best Free remote desktop software for windows?
5·2 years agoWhat? This just isn’t true? I RDP into work all time and it picks up my user session with all open apps from the last time I was physically at the machine. Then next time I’m at the machine, it picks up the session from last time I remoted in. In other words, as long as you always use the same account, it’s always the same session.
Your activity also can’t be viewed by a user on the remote system
You are right this, but this is actually a benefit in my opinion. The last thing I want is for someone to turn on my monitor and see everything I’m doing. I like that it’s a private session of sorts.
Also RDP is better at adapting resolutions (I want my session to use my local monitors’ resolution, not the remote one) and forwarding system key shortcuts than any other remote solution I’ve used.

9·2 years agoIt’s very optimistic to think people will be able to describe what they’re going to do before they do it. I find things rarely go exactly as planned and my commit messages usually include some nuance about my changes that I didn’t anticipate.

Programming@programming.dev•What search engine do you use?
1·2 years agoI run a “public” instance with basic auth so I can use it from anywhere (phone, work). I’ve made my instance my default search engine everywhere. (I know basic auth is not the most secure but I wouldn’t even really care it other people used my instance; I just don’t want it hammered.)
I’ve been really impressed by Dart as a programming language. I’ll admit I don’t have a breadth of knowledge, but coming from C# I feel right at home, and it has a few extra neat tricks that C# is picking up in return (like empty list syntax and the spread operator).
