A roasted bird? Why not? Y’all are making assumptions that this is a chicken and the peasant a small farmer but why not a traveling mime trapping pigeons from the square?

politics @lemmy.world•The Actual Gavin Newsom Is Much Worse Than You Think
1·10 hours agoThese do annoy me. Of course Newsom is not the best candidate but they are distracting everyone from how much better that would be than the current shitshow
And I have to ask y’all, are we really going to an insists on an ideal candidate regardless whether they are electable?
I have no idea whether Newsom is but he has name recognition, presidential presence, and a successful “populist” strategy. He has successfully positioned himself as a leading foil of Trump. All that stuff that seem necessary for getting elected even if they have no part in whether they would do well for their constituents. …. And they’re building a train!
I do always wonder if this is just republicans trying to astroturf “both sides the same”.

politics @lemmy.world•The Actual Gavin Newsom Is Much Worse Than You Think
2·10 hours agoThere’s an argument that most of the stuff done in trumps name would be “ok” if he did it legally and that’s what people wanted. It’s the abuse of authority, the personal enrichment, violating the constitution, holding people above the law, enforcing personal feelings, violating checks and balances that are the critical issues.
I wouldn’t want to live in such a society but it would at least be “legitimate”

1·10 hours agoA few years back the Boston globe did an expose on panhandlers and yeah, there are scammers and you need to recognize them but most people in need are truly people in need.
My take on it was that aggressive panhandlers in prime locations (major tourist spots, intersections with chronic backups) are most likely scammers. People sitting quietly looking defeated are in need. The hard part is deciding whether/how to help all those in between, but it’s good to remember that most people who look homeless are homeless
Then there’s that weird guy who approached to talk about his knife, probably to try to steal my dog while technically not threatening - I so regret not calling police

Good question, I may have to “investigate” too. I missed it live but maybe I’ll track down some videos

1·3 days agoWow, 12! You’re right
And sure enough, searching for Rivian returns that they are only allowed to sell in 25 US states. It probably hasn’t mattered much with the R1 generation being relatively few sales but now that they’re coming out with R2 and R3, and expecting a lot more sales, they need a way around this
It’s ridiculous that any state would create a law for a single manufacturer: that needs to be fixed
Step 0. Make sure your networking equipment can do vlans and subnets.
Given how much I paid for a “high end” consumer router, I just assumed ……
You just have to get older. I have it on good authority that the law of supply and demand turn things around - men can be old enough to have made money while still being able to date women young enough to not have made money (and no, we’re not Epstein related)
Or alternatively, why don’t we run with that approach? So many things would benefit from “save to text”. A bit farther afield but why not save to image, save to html, etc.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Is Home Assistant the recommended default for smart homes?English
2·5 days agoI got into each mesh technology for specific devices. Home Assistant supports them all and they seem to coexist just fine in my use case.
I have a small to medium setup with only a few simple automations and a focus on voice control and scheduling
Preference
- Thread - given Apple, Amazon, and Google support and the standardization work, I expect this to be the future. Eventually. But I’m getting impatient. If I’m buying a device, I prefer Thread but usually it’s not yet
- z-Wave - my first, and most devices. Basically this was what was most available at local stores when I started. No complaints
- Zigbee - by far the biggest selection of simple, cheap sensors. I need to more of those
- all too much is WiFi but I try to avoid
But it also helps that my approach is generally switches and outlets. Hard-wired, predictable network, tend to be repeaters. I have comparatively fewer leaf nodes.
This approach also fits in with my biggest challenge. While my house is small, it’s an older one with dense materials that blocks a lot of radio signals. For example I have no cell phone reception inside yet strong signal just out any door. My focus on switches and outlets overcome this with a repeater in every room
So for example a few years back I got a z-wave IR blaster to control a mini-split AC because at the time I mostly used z-wave. I already had a z-wave light switch in the same room, acting as a repeater, so no worries about connectivity. Now I have both z-wave and Zigbee light switches in that room so expect both meshes to be strong for any future devices in that room
I wasn’t implying sinister, but utter incompetence. Too long of screws is an “oops” but this is like attaching a cabinet to the “wet wall” and blaming too long screws for the leaking pipe
Pretty much never should have screwed anything into the subfloor, regardless of screws long enough to go through the flooring. That’s entirely wrong. If it were screwed into the joists, or blocking between joists, this could not have happened

101·6 days agoI’ll also vote to reconsider WiFi. Home Assistant supports a variety of local mesh networks that by default can’t connect to the cloud and whose devices are cheaper and lower power.
I use all three of zwave, Zigbee, and thread; ha works with whatever you need.

2·6 days agoI choose to pay for remote access, but it’s for convenience and to support the developers. You are free to configure it yourself in a couple ways (and there is decent documentation) or do without remote access
I don’t know how you set up remote access for OpenHab, but from a quick glance at the web site it looks similar

2·7 days agoBefore the current chaos, it really didn’t even make sense to have that distinction. My Toyota and my Honda were both built in the us. Not just assembled, but with a higher percentage of us-manufactured parts than my old pontiac
Why do we care? I can be a shareholder either way, if I had money. The executives dont care about me either way nor do they directly affect me. But it’s nice when the factory is here, employing thousands of my fellow citizens.
Having lived through it, I also understand this was a hard-won battle for local labor, fought for in previous trade battles
